Before you buy that guitar, here are a choice few words to live by:

Be smart about types of guitars. A few common models: Acoustics are basic guitars to require no amplification. Electrics are just the opposite, they rely on electronic sound amplification. Acoustic Electric guitars can go either way.
And be smart about the style of music you will play. Acoustic is fine for classical, but it likely won't do for rock.

Beginners should look for package deals. Like any hobby, there are packages marketed for beginners that have everything you need to give the hobby a test run without investing heavily. Not always the best quality, but a good place to start.
Looking for something for a young 'un? Look for half and three-quarter size guitars and accessories.

Stick with the big names in the industry. Consider something like Ibanez, Fender, or Yamaha. Looking for quality? Consider a high-end dealer like Paul Reed Smith.

Know the return policy! There is no reason you can't buy online with confidence, but it only makes sense to know the kind of company you are dealing with before making a purchase. If you are purchasing on ebay from an individual, you have certain protections provided by ebay.
Also, Use a credit card, preferably one with buyer protection. Any Visa or Mastercard will allow you to dispute a charge and you won't be on the hook for the charge.

Consider your local campus. Got a college nearby? You will often find college students willing to forgo their musical ambitions, or at least an instrument they don't use anymore, to pay their expenses. To that end, don't forget to work the local music shops in your area too. They often have wholesale deals available and sales on nicked and dented instruments.
